HR COACHING - A CASE STUDY
Clara* is a senior HR manager for a large multinational. She had only been in post for a few weeks and had inherited a messy, complex and longstanding Employee Relations case.
Being new, she was eager to make a good impression but was soon aware that the organisation had an evident liability for the case in hand. The individual was neurodivergent, off sick with anxiety related stress, as a result of the situation, and the grievance he raised was about to be heard after nearly a year.
The stakes felt extremely high. Emotionally, financially and reputationally for all parties. As a result, Clara was anxious about her role in facilitating the process and supporting both the managers hearing the case and the employee. The day before the hearing, she suffered a panic attack.
It was very short notice, but we had a lengthy phone call. Clara is competent, intelligent and articulate. She was also at the mercy of her own fight-flight reflex. After some gentle chat and some light calming exercises, she could outline her worries. Naturally, she had been running through every possible future scenario and none of them seemed to offer a win-win.
After some prompting to consider the more immediate goals, a reflection on previous cases where she'd worried and yet had proven herself capable and competent time and again, we devised methods to help her stay with the moment and not to jump ahead to events that had yet to happen.
She messaged me a couple of days after to thank me for getting her through. The meeting was difficult, as expected but no-where near as bad as she'd imagined. She was recognised for her knowledge and support by all parties and is managing the case one step at a time with a clear head. Taking time to reflect with targeted exercises that negate dwelling and promote learning.
